Many state legislators are considering proposals that would streamline the prior authorization process. According to the AMA, 30 state legislatures considered prior authorization bills in 2023 — many of which use the organization’s model legislation. Despite the finalization of the Advancing Interoperability and Improving Prior Authorization Processes rule, the AMA believes there is more work to do at the state and federal levels.
