What’s the Claim?

A systematic review of 10 studies evaluating “wide-awake local anesthesia no tourniquet” (WALANT) surgery for distal radius fractures found:

Pain scores generally were 1 to 2 out of 10 on Postoperative Day 1
The operations (almost all volar platings) generally took about an hour
In the seven comparative studies in the systematic review, WALANT was either no different from or better than other anesthetic approaches (which were a mixed bag of general anesthesia, Bier block, or axillary block) in terms of pain, ROM, or outcomes scores
