WALANT for Distal Radius Fractures?

Seems like it's possible, which is both important and practical

WALANT for Distal Radius Fractures?

What’s the Claim?

A systematic review of 10 studies evaluating “wide-awake local anesthesia no tourniquet” (WALANT) surgery for distal radius fractures found:

  • Pain scores generally were 1 to 2 out of 10 on Postoperative Day 1
  • The operations (almost all volar platings) generally took about an hour
  • In the seven comparative studies in the systematic review, WALANT was either no different from or better than other anesthetic approaches (which were a mixed bag of general anesthesia, Bier block, or axillary block) in terms of pain, ROM, or outcomes scores

How’s It Stack Up?
