Where Ortho Surgeons Are — And Where We Aren’t

Opportunities exist in states with lower coverage

  • Slight declining trend in number of orthopaedic surgeons began before the pandemic, but recovery has been robust.
  • California has the highest number of active orthopaedic surgeons (2406), while Texas comes in second (1621).
  • More than half of orthopaedic surgeons are subspecialized, with the most common subspecialties being sports, hand, and joint replacement.
  • The aging of the U.S. population will drive future demand in subspecialties that care for that slice of the demographic pie.
