To Send or Not to Send (Pathology) — That is the Question

The umpteenth study on this topic made us wonder: Is everything about the reported use of routine pathology exactly as it appears?

What’s the Claim?

A case series found that 99.7% (317 of 318) of presumed dorsal wrist ganglion cysts that were sent for pathologic analysis indeed were ganglions. The one non-ganglion in the series was a benign cystic vascular malformation. The authors concluded sending routine pathology on suspected ganglion cysts is not indicated.
