The Squeeze on Doctors' Productivity

Doctors are more productive than previous years but are paid less for the same amount of work. Practices should strategically deploy support staff to the most productive doctors.

  • Doctors are generating more wRVUs but are being paid less per wRVU.
  • In the surgical specialties, wRVUs rose in 2023 (6462 compared to 6245 the prior year, +3%).
  • Median support staff FTEs per 10,000 wRVU remains higher for primary care (4.57) than it is in the surgical specialties (2.97).
  • In high-performing practices, advanced practice providers account for more than half of the provider FTEs.
