Recent Price Transparency Bill: What are the Impacts?

A bill that is likely to come before Congress soon will have impacts for orthopaedic practices, especially (but not exclusively) those with ambulatory surgical centers—here’s what they are.

Price transparency is the focus of a bipartisan legislative package that was proposed by three key U.S. House committees: the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the Ways and Means Committee, and the Education and Workforce Committee. The bill is called the Lower Costs, More Transparency Act (LCMTA), and it combines the work of each committee about how to make health care prices more well known both to patients and providers. The proposal would require hospitals, clinical labs, imaging service providers, ambulatory surgery centers, and pharmacy benefit managers to meet new price transparency requirements, including publishing pricing for shoppable services to be made available to consumers.
