Oversight of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

A GOP senator’s white paper may have implications on healthcare uses of AI; you’ve got a chance to provide feedback, but only for a couple of more days.

What

Healthcare-related AI programs represent an area of growing interest and investment. Stakeholders and policymakers alike are considering how rapid innovation can be balanced with patient safety. U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA), a physician and Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, & Pensions (HELP), recently released a white paper on the risks and benefits of AI in health care, education, and the workforce. It focused on the existing and still-needed regulatory oversight of AI applications in drug development, diagnosing and treating diseases, and automating administrative tasks. Senator Cassidy emphasized in the white paper that a one-size-fits-all approach to oversight will not work where AI is concerned.

When

Senator Cassidy’s white paper was released on September 6, 2023. Feedback is requested from stakeholders by THIS Friday (September 22, 2023).
