Medicare Physician Pay Lags Behind Inflation

Relative to inflation, from 2001 to 2023, Medicare payments to doctors fell 26%

  • Chronically inadequate Medicare payments will take a toll on older adults' access to high-quality care.
  • Annual inflation-based updates would put physicians on equal footing with other health professionals paid by Medicare.
  • U.S. bipartisan bill H.R. 2474, the “Strengthening Medicare for Patients and Providers Act,” provides for an update that is equal to the annual percentage increase in the Medicare Economic Index.
