Keeping Your Gutters Clean in TAA
A simple but worthwhile suggestion to minimize reoperation after ankle replacement
What’s the Claim?
A retrospective, comparative study compared total ankle arthroplasties (TAAs) performed for arthritis following an ankle or lower-leg fracture from those having TAA for other diagnoses, and found:
- No differences in outcomes scores or survivorship free from revision
- But the post-fracture group was more than twice as likely to undergo reoperation (32% versus 15%) than the non-fracture group
Gutter debridement was the most common indication for reoperation.
