Even Insured Individuals Struggle With Medical Debt
Insurance coverage does not guarantee freedom from the burden of medical debt
- Insurance coverage doesn't prevent medical debt. One-third of adults with employer coverage and those with Medicare report paying off medical or dental debt.
- Almost half of those individuals report that the amount is over $2000 (remember that the median personal income in the USA is about $40,000)
- A large percentage of insured working-age adults find it difficult to afford healthcare (43% of those with employer coverage, 51% of those with Medicare).
