A Reason for Patients to See Your PT Before TKA

A meta-analysis found that exercises before TKA — "prehabilitation" — delivered clinically important improvements in function for at least 6 weeks after arthroplasty

What’s the Claim?

A meta-analysis limited to RCTs found moderate-certainty evidence that “prehabilitation” (usually a combination of exercises with or without pain management) improved functional endpoints six weeks after surgery in patients undergoing TKA. Lower-certainty evidence suggested that the benefits may be longer-lasting than that, and that “prehab” before surgery may improve function after hip replacement.
