What Are We Paying for in Healthcare?

Americans want more transparency in healthcare costs, and many feel that costs do not reflect quality

  • Fewer than 1 in 5 U.S. adults are aware of healthcare costs before receiving care.
  • Nearly all Americans want to know actual, upfront prices (not estimates) of lab and imaging tests, surgeries, and other medical services.
  • Patients would use upfront prices to shop for what they perceive to be the best quality care for the price.
  • Momentum is growing on Capitol Hill, where Senate and House bills have been introduced to strengthen and expand healthcare price transparency requirements.
